WHE History & Mission

The World Healing Exchange (WHE) program began in 2009 with AWB’s first trip to Nepal. The purpose of the WHE is to bring health care practitioners from the U.S. and abroad to locations that are rich in culture and indigenous healing traditions, but suffer from significant trauma as a result of disasters, wars, environmental devastation and economic hardship. 

In this process, the health care practitioners on the WHE journeys:

  • Experience traditional medicine practices, which then helps inform their own work as healers
  • Conduct clinics in urban and rural areas as they travel, providing services to many under-served communities
  • Deepen their connection to nature, global culture and each other – all of which serves their own private practices and service work in the world
  • Experience the social and economic realities of the world as part of their commitment to understanding the global context for their service
  • Participate in deep conversations and practices together as a group – enhancing their personal and professional lives – and providing rejuvenation for their work in the world
  • Open the possibility of deeper relationship with the communities visited, which may then lead to trainings and the creation of sustainable programs for those communities

Since 2009 AWB has taken WHE trips to:

  • Mexico (Yucatan – working with Mayan elders; Baja – doing Five Element training in deep nature; Oaxaca – working with traditional medicine healers);
  • Ecuador (working with traditional healers in indigenous communities of the Amazon and the highlands);
  • Mongolia (working with traditional medicine doctors and focusing on issues of alcoholism);
  • Nepal (working with Nepali and Tibetan spiritual traditions, and herbal healers)
  • Israel/West Bank (working with Israeli & Palestinian healthcare workers including acupuncturists and herbalist)

 

On all of these trips, clinics have been provided in villages and cities, serving the local and indigenous communities of the region. In Nepal this work has initiated ongoing clinics staffed by AWB’s Nepali trainees. These clinics serve women and children who have been trafficked; factory workers; peacemaking groups; and rural communities often lacking health care services.

The World Healing Exchange program weaves inner practice and outer practice, service to spirit with service to others.
